About Tianmen Mountain
“A blockbuster nature-meets-engineering spectacle — like the mountain equivalent of a theme park ride, but the mountain is genuinely 1,519 meters tall and the glass is genuinely over a 300-meter drop.”
Tianmen Mountain is Zhangjiajie's adrenaline attraction — a spectacular combination of engineering marvels and natural wonders that delivers genuine thrills. The 7.5 km cable car ride from downtown Zhangjiajie is jaw-dropping as you ascend from city streets into mountain clouds. The 999 steps to Heaven's Gate (Tianmen Cave) are a memorable physical challenge. The glass skywalks bolted onto sheer cliff faces provide heart-pounding moments even for non-acrophobic visitors. The 99-bend mountain road is an engineering wonder. However, this is a heavily managed, theme-park-style mountain experience — you're funneled along set routes with escalators, shuttle buses, and crowd management. Fog frequently obscures views, and the glass skywalks are less dramatic in poor visibility. Lines for the cable car can exceed an hour during peak times. The ¥288 ticket is expensive by Chinese standards but covers cable car, buses, and all attractions. Best for thrill-seekers and visitors who want dramatic mountain scenery without serious hiking.
Top Questions from Travelers
Why This Place Matters
Tianmen Cave is revered in Chinese culture as a gateway to heaven — its formation in 263 AD (when part of the mountain collapsed creating the hole) was recorded in historical texts as a divine omen during the Three Kingdoms period. The name 'Heaven's Gate' reflects the Taoist belief that the mountain connects earth and sky. The 999 steps encode the number 9, which represents the highest single digit and is associated with the emperor and heaven in Chinese numerology.

Tianmen Mountain Cable Car (天门山索道)
The world's longest single-section cable car at 7,455 meters, ascending 1,279 meters from downtown Zhangjiajie to the mountain summit in about 28 minutes. The ride passes over the city, then through forests, and finally through cloud layers — an experience in itself.
This is not a short scenic gondola — it's a 28-minute journey that feels like ascending into another world. The transition from urban streets to mountain wilderness is surreal.

What Most Visitors Miss
Both the east AND west summit trails
Many visitors only walk one side due to time pressure. Both the east trail (with the Coiling Dragon glass walk) and west trail (with different viewpoints and its own glass section) are worth walking — each offers distinct perspectives. Budget an extra hour to do both.
Tianmen Mountain Temple (天门山寺)
A Buddhist temple at the summit that most visitors rush past. It's a peaceful counterpoint to the adrenaline of the glass walks, with mountain views from its courtyards.

Autumn
offer the best weather — clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Summer has dramatic cloud formations but heavy rain.
Winter
brings stunning ice and snow scenery but glass skywalks and some trails may close for safety. The mountain summit is always significantly cooler than the city below.
Book the earliest time slot (8:00 AM). If the morning starts foggy, don't despair — mountain weather changes rapidly and fog often clears by mid-morning, revealing dramatic views.
What to Skip
The overpriced summit restaurants — bring your own food and water. The photo spots where staff take your picture and charge ¥20-50 for prints.
Pro Tips
Wear layers you can remove — you'll be hot climbing the 999 steps but cold on the windy summit. The escalators inside the mountain are the longest in the world and are included in your ticket — ride them for the experience alone. If fog blocks views on the summit, the glass walks and Tianmen Cave are still impressive.
Photo Spots
Cable car approaching the mountain wall
Have camera ready during the final 5 minutes of the cable car ride as you approach the cliff face — the mountain looms dramatically ahead.
Tianmen Cave from the 999 steps
Photograph from about halfway down the steps looking up — this gives the classic perspective of the massive cave opening with steps leading into it.
Glass skywalk on the east side (Coiling Dragon Cliff)
Clear day required for the full effect. Look straight down through the glass for vertigo-inducing shots of the 300m drop.
Pair With
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (张家界国家森林公园)

If you enjoyed the glass skywalks, the world's highest and longest glass bridge offers an even more dramatic glass experience over a canyon.

Queue Situation
Cable car queues: 30-60 minutes typical, 2+ hours on holidays. The VIP fast-track option costs extra but skips the queue. Escalator queues inside the mountain are usually 10-20 minutes.
Tips & Warnings
Fog frequently obscures summit views
The mountain creates its own weather. Clear skies in the city below don't guarantee clear views at the summit. Mornings are generally clearer than afternoons. If fog is thick, the glass walks lose their dramatic effect since you can't see the drop.
The 999 steps are genuinely exhausting
The steps are steep and relentless, especially the upper half. Escalators are available as an alternative for the upper section. Descending is much easier than ascending. Bring water and take breaks. If you're feeling wrecked afterward, message our team — we can book a nearby spa or have a taxi waiting for you at the coach drop-off point.
Winter closures affect key attractions
Glass skywalks, some trails, and the 99-bend road may close when ice forms (typically December-February). Route C (fast cable car only) may be the only option. The winter snow scenery is beautiful but access is limited.
Motion sickness on the 99-bend road
The coach ride through 99 hairpin turns causes motion sickness in many visitors. Take medication before the ride if you're sensitive. Route C avoids the road entirely.
What to Bring
Wear
Layers — warm for the summit, lighter for the 999 steps. Non-slip shoes essential (glass walks and stone steps can be slippery). Rain jacket. Wind-proof jacket for summit.
Bring
Warm jacket. Rain gear. Water (at least 1 liter). Snacks. Camera. Passport. Motion sickness medication if prone. Cash for shoe covers (¥5).
Don't Bring
Large bags (luggage storage available at the cable car station, ¥5-10). Heels or sandals. Selfie sticks may be restricted on glass walks.
Physical Reality
moderate-to-strenuous
The cable car and escalators make much of the mountain accessible without hiking. Summit trails are paved with some stairs. The 999 steps to Tianmen Cave are very strenuous (can be avoided via escalators). Glass walks are flat but exposed to heights.
Foreigners Watch Out
- Tickets MUST be booked online in advance with passport number — there are no walk-in tickets. Book at least 1-2 days ahead, more during holidays. If you're struggling with the booking system or can't figure out which route and time slot to pick, our concierge can handle it — message us with your travel date.
- The cable car station is in downtown Zhangjiajie city (NOT in Wulingyuan/the National Forest Park area). It's a different attraction from Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and requires a separate ticket.
- The summit is 10-15°C colder than the city — bring warm clothing even in summer. Wind chill on exposed glass walks makes it feel even colder.
- Route selection (A/B/C) is made at booking time and cannot be changed on-site. Research routes before booking.
If Things Go Wrong
Cable car closed due to wind or storms
→ Closures are announced at the station. Your ticket can be refunded or rescheduled. Check weather before heading to the station.
Glass skywalks closed due to ice or weather
→ The summit trails are still walkable (with regular paved sections instead of glass). Tianmen Cave and the cable car still operate in most conditions.
