About Chunxi Road Pedestrian Street
“Electric and relentlessly modern — neon screens towering over crowds of stylish young Chengdu locals, the smell of Sichuan peppercorn drifting from street food carts, and the distinct feeling that you're at the center of one of China's most confident cities.”
Chunxi Road is Chengdu's most famous commercial district, drawing over 300,000 daily visitors to a sprawling pedestrian zone that blends century-old heritage with ultra-modern retail. The area is anchored by two landmarks: IFS (International Finance Square), a luxury mall with the iconic giant climbing panda sculpture on its rooftop, and Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li, a trendy open-air shopping complex built around the 1,600-year-old Daci Temple. The massive 3D LED screens on surrounding buildings create a Times Square-like atmosphere at night. Street food vendors, chain restaurants, and Sichuan specialty shops fill every gap between the malls. The area is genuinely lively and photogenic — the energy is infectious. The downsides: it's extremely crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. It's primarily a shopping and eating destination — if you don't enjoy commercial districts, you won't find much here. Prices at restaurants and shops are higher than elsewhere in Chengdu. The experience is similar to major commercial streets in other Chinese cities (Nanjing Road in Shanghai, Wangfujing in Beijing) but with distinctly Chengdu flavor — more relaxed, more food-focused, and with that signature Sichuan attitude. Best for shopping enthusiasts, food lovers, and anyone who wants to experience Chengdu's modern urban energy.
Top Questions from Travelers
Why This Place Matters
Chunxi Road was built in 1924 by warlord Yang Sen, originally named 'Senwei Road' after his military title. It was renamed using a phrase from Laozi's Dao De Jing: 'the masses bustling joyfully, as if attending a great feast, as if ascending a spring terrace' (众人熙熙,如享太牢,如登春台) — a remarkably apt description that still holds a century later. The street was supposed to be built in a straight line, but a French consulate translator who owned a pharmacy on the route refused to demolish his building, forcing the road to zigzag — which is why Chunxi East Road and Chunxi West Road don't align at Zhongshan Square today. The area has evolved from a Republican-era commercial street to a Communist-era state department store zone to today's international luxury and street food hybrid — a hundred years of Chinese commercial history in one walkable district.

IFS Climbing Panda (爬墙熊猫)
A massive sculpture of a giant panda climbing the exterior wall of the IFS building — Chengdu's most recognizable modern landmark. Take the elevator to the 7th floor rooftop to see the panda's face up close, with the Chengdu skyline as backdrop. The rooftop also has art installations, gardens, and swings.
This is the quintessential 'I was in Chengdu' photo. The panda's backside is visible from the street below (also a fun photo), but the 7th floor rooftop gives you the face-to-face shot. Free to access.

What Most Visitors Miss
Daci Temple (大慈寺) inside Taikoo Li
A 1,600-year-old Buddhist temple sitting right in the middle of the luxury shopping complex. Free entry, peaceful atmosphere, and you can drink gaiwan tea in the temple courtyard. Most shoppers walk right past it.
Fang Suo Commune bookstore (方所) in Taikoo Li basement
A stunning bookstore with a dramatic spiral staircase, curated design items, and a coffee bar. Even if you don't read Chinese, the architectural space is worth seeing — one of China's most beautiful bookstores.
The side streets off the main pedestrian strip
Tangba Street (镗钯街) has Instagram-worthy walls and the Panda Bookstore. Side alleys have more authentic (and cheaper) food options than the main strip. Walk one or two blocks off Chunxi Road for better value and more local atmosphere.

Winter
has festive decorations (Christmas and Chinese New Year installations are elaborate). Chengdu's mild climate makes this a year-round destination.
Visit in the early evening when shops are still open but the night atmosphere is beginning. The 3D LED screens are most impressive after dark. Combine with a visit to nearby Daci Temple during daytime for a nice contrast.
What to Skip
The main-strip tourist restaurants with aggressive touts — walk one block off the main pedestrian area for better food at lower prices. The generic souvenir shops selling the same panda merchandise everywhere. The luxury brand stores (same as anywhere else in the world).
Pro Tips
Chunxi Road is best as an evening activity — combine with daytime visits to cultural sites (Wenshu Monastery, People's Park) and come here when the sun goes down. The area connects to Taikoo Li which connects to Daci Temple — you can flow naturally between commercial energy and temple calm. Download Dianping (大众点评) app for restaurant ratings and reviews.
Photo Spots
IFS 7th floor rooftop with the climbing panda
Go early on weekdays to avoid long queues. Late afternoon light is best. Get both the face-to-face shot and the wider shot showing the panda against the Chengdu skyline.
Main Chunxi Road square at night with 3D LED screens
Shoot from the center of the square facing the main screen building. Include the crowds for scale and atmosphere. Video captures the 3D effects better than still photos.

Tips & Warnings
Extremely crowded on weekends and holidays
Weekday evenings offer the best balance of atmosphere and manageable crowds. During National Day (Oct 1-7) and Spring Festival, the area becomes shoulder-to-shoulder packed. If you dislike crowds, visit on a weekday afternoon.
The 3D screen doesn't play 3D content continuously
The impressive 3D clips play intermittently between regular advertisements. You may need to wait 5-10 minutes for a 3D sequence. Don't make a special trip just for the screen — enjoy it as part of the overall evening atmosphere.
What to Bring
Wear
Casual — anything goes. Chengdu is one of China's most fashion-conscious cities, and the Chunxi Road crowd tends to dress up, but there's no dress code. Comfortable walking shoes essential.
Bring
Phone for photos and payment apps. Some cash as backup. Comfortable shoes for extensive walking.
Don't Bring
Nothing specific to avoid.
Physical Reality
easy
Flat pedestrian streets throughout. Malls have elevators and escalators. Wheelchair and stroller accessible. The IFS 7th floor panda viewing area is accessible by elevator. Total walking distance depends on how much you explore — the core area is about 1-2 km.
Foreigners Watch Out
- This is a commercial district, not a historical attraction — set expectations accordingly. It's about atmosphere, food, and modern Chengdu energy.
- Street food vendors and smaller shops accept WeChat Pay and Alipay almost exclusively. Carry some cash as backup, or have a Chinese payment app set up. If you're struggling with payment apps, message our team — we can walk you through setup or place food orders on your behalf.
- The area is very safe, including at night. Pickpocketing can occur in dense crowds — keep valuables secure.
- Public toilets are scarce — use the bathrooms inside IFS, Taikoo Li, or other malls.
- Many locals film TikTok (Douyin) videos on the streets — you may inadvertently appear in someone's video. Privacy-conscious visitors should be aware.
If Things Go Wrong
Too crowded to enjoy
→ Duck into Taikoo Li's 'Slow Lane' or Daci Temple for a calmer experience. The side streets one block off the main pedestrian strip are much less crowded.
