About Gubei Water Town
“A cinematic northern water town where lantern-lit canals wind between gray-brick courtyard buildings, and the Great Wall glows on the mountainside above — simultaneously artificial and genuinely beautiful.”
Gubei Water Town is a modern recreation of a traditional southern Chinese water town, built on the site of five former villages in Miyun District, about 120 km northeast of central Beijing. Opened around 2014, it was modeled after Wuzhen in Zhejiang Province and offers a curated experience of traditional architecture, canal-side walks, artisan workshops, and hotels — all set against the dramatic backdrop of the Simatai Great Wall. The 9-square-kilometer resort features Ming and Qing dynasty-style buildings, boat rides on canals, hot spring baths, craft demonstrations (tie-dye, paper-cutting, shadow puppetry), and dozens of restaurants and guesthouses. The night scene is genuinely spectacular — the illuminated town reflected in waterways with the lit-up Great Wall snaking across the mountains above is unforgettable. Honest downsides: this is NOT a real ancient town. Everything was built within the last 15 years, and some visitors feel it lacks authenticity compared to genuine water towns. The entrance fee (140 RMB) is steep for what is essentially a themed resort. Food and accommodation inside are overpriced. The journey from central Beijing takes 2-2.5 hours each way, making a day trip exhausting. On weekdays, the town can feel eerily empty; on holidays, it is overcrowded. But as a weekend getaway combining Great Wall access, hot springs, beautiful architecture, and stunning night photography, it delivers an experience unavailable anywhere else near Beijing.
Top Questions from Travelers
Why This Place Matters
Gubei Water Town occupies an area of deep military history — Gubeikou Pass was one of the most important northern defensive gates for Beijing for over a thousand years, dating back to the Northern Qi dynasty. The 1933 Battle of the Great Wall, where Chinese forces resisted Japanese invasion, was fought here. The modern water town was designed by Chen Xianghong, the same developer behind Wuzhen Water Town in Zhejiang Province, and opened in phases from 2014. It represents a modern Chinese approach to tourism: recreating idealized traditional environments for domestic tourists seeking beauty, relaxation, and nostalgia. While it lacks historical authenticity, the quality of construction and the integration with the genuine Simatai Great Wall create an experience that is uniquely compelling.

Tips & Warnings
The 2.5-hour journey each way makes day trips exhausting
Stay overnight if at all possible. A day trip means spending 5 hours in transit for a few hours on-site, and you will miss the best part — the night scene.
Everything inside is expensive — food, souvenirs, activities
Budget approximately 300-500 RMB per person per day for meals inside the town. Bring snacks. Hotel prices range from 800-3000 RMB per night depending on season and room type.
It is NOT a real ancient town
Set expectations accordingly. If you want authentic heritage, this is not it. If you want a beautiful, well-maintained setting for relaxation and photography with Great Wall access, it delivers.
What to Bring
Wear
Comfortable walking shoes with good grip (cobblestone streets). Layers — mountain area temperatures can be 5-10°C cooler than Beijing city. Bring a swimsuit for hot springs.
Bring
Camera with tripod for night photography. Portable charger. Cash as backup for payment. Warm clothing in autumn/winter. Mosquito repellent in summer.
Don't Bring
Heavy luggage — the town involves a lot of walking on uneven surfaces. Pack light for an overnight stay.
Physical Reality
moderate
The water town itself is mostly flat along the canals, but some areas have steps and uneven cobblestones. The Simatai Great Wall is strenuous (steep climbs, no handrails in places). A cable car is available for the Great Wall. Free shuttle buses operate within the resort.
Foreigners Watch Out
- The Dongzhimen direct bus only accepts specific payment methods: Yitongxing app, Beijing Transit card, or cash (no change given). No international cards. If the bus payment situation seems too complicated, our team can arrange a private car transfer from your Beijing hotel — it costs more but eliminates the hassle entirely.
- Google Maps does not work in China — use Baidu Maps or Amap (Gaode).
- The Great Wall night tour requires separate advance booking and is not included in the water town ticket.
- Most restaurants and shops inside only accept Alipay/WeChat Pay. Bring cash as backup for the few places that accept it.
